2018 Orbea Rallon Carbon
We had heard rumours of a carbon offering of the Orbea Rallon for the last year and they have delivered with the all new and totally redesigned 2018 Orbea Rallon Carbon, which now sports the 29 inch wheels. Dirt magazine are already putting it in the running for Enduro bike of the year while EnduroMTB mag is calling it ‘phenomenal’.
2018 Orbea Rallon M-Ltd
Above we have the top spec’d Orbea Rallon M-LTD which comes loaded with the best components on the market. XX1 Eagle Gold 12 speed drivetrain which is the pinnacle of shifting. Offering the carbon XX1 crankset paired with DT Swiss XMC 1200 carbon wheelset which we have both been able to try out and can say they are one of the best carbon wheelsets out there and lighter than a Chris King/Enve combo. When buying a big travel 29er one of the most important upgrades is getting yourself a decent wheelset, it plays a huge part in how the bike rides when having 29″ wheels. It can really transform the bike.
Suspension, which we are stoked about is again handled with Fox across the 3 models available. Reliable, tunable and really at the top of their game right now. Obviously, you can’t forget that kashima makes any bike look rad! 😉 Equipped with the Factory Float 36 RC2s and DHX2 coil with a choice of equipping it with the Float X2 or the new lighter weight package of the DPX2. Braking is supplied by Sram Guide RSC with an option to swap out for Sram Code RSCs or the Shimano XTR trails brakes for an extra £35.
Once again Raceface handles cockpit and the dropper post with the Turbine 150mm dropper, Race face NEXT carbon bars matched with the turbine 35mm stem. Now this sounds like a shed load of high-end carbon components. You may be thinking this has got to be close to the 10k mark like the Intense Tracer? You’re wrong, it is far from that retailing at £6899. Some may think that is still expensive but when you break down the bike and how much you are getting it’s pretty remarkable.
2018 Orbea Rallon M-Team
1 of 3 down and now we have the M-team middle spec’d Rallon. This package we feel is going to be the most popular out of the 3 at £5699 it’s an outstanding package from Orbea. Very similar build to the current 2017 Rallon X-team with it being equipped with SRAM X01 Eagle 12 speed and a Truvativ Descendant carbon crank or a choice of a Rotor QX1 crankset with a 32T chainring.
A great upgrade from the current 2017 Rallon is the DT Swiss Spline E-1501 wheelset. Wider, stiffer which means a better profile for the tyres, bigger footprint on the ground resulting in more grip on the trail, a no brainer!
The suspension is as I said before handled by Fox and a Factory Float 36 RC2 upfront and Float X2 in the rear with the choice of swapping out to a DPX2 or DHX2 coil shock if you prefer. It’s great with Orbea that you can tweek the offerings at the checkout to add that customization to get the right build for you. Orbea are also adding their MYO customization programme to the Rallon which means you will be able to choose a color combination ranging from 12 different colours to create a unique colour for yourself. To find out more about that, visit www.orbea.com> search for Rallon, then click on a bike of your choice and above the spec it will have a MYO Customization button.
2018 Orbea Rallon M10
3rd and final Orbea Rallon is the M10. Now at £3899 and a spec that you can pick out the box and race, its going to be popular there’s no doubt about it. Stunning colours to choose from with the option of the custom MYO Programme, can you get much better then this??
If you are a looking to get your foot in the door with a high end carbon frame but with a full build then this is the one. The Orbea Rallon M10 is easily upgradeable if you like, personally I would upgrade the fork the to Factory Float 36 RC2 instead of the Performance it is stocked with for more adjustment and equal adjustment to the rear shock but by all means the Performance 36s are still packed with tonnes of performance. As I a racer myself I would to have the tune-ability.
SRAM have worked their magic and recently released the SRAM GX Eagle 12 speed groupset which is a no brainer if you are looking to upgrade a group set after market or when you are looking to buy an entry level enduro steed. They really have out done themselves. 12 speed eagle on a entry level carbon enduro bike under 4k!!? Amazing! Stopping power is done by Shimanos reliable XT M8000 brakes and to help transfer that stopping power to the ground you have across all three models Maxxis rubber, with a Minion DHF on the front and a Aggressor on the rear. Raceface finishing kit is a solid finishing touch to the bike without any own branded components like brands we know 😉
2018 Orbea Rallon First Ride Reviews
Pinkbike – “On the trails, the Rallon feels stiff and agile. This bike asks for speed, and rides true to its racing-oriented spirit. The climbing and general pedaling position make you feel comfortable without the feeling of fighting against the bike as with some other enduro beasts.”
Dirt Magazine – Straight out of the box this bike is a weapon! Built to go fast and eat up the terrain. Even more so in my eyes with the coil damper fitted. This made for a much more supple ride when the going got tough and with a weight coming in at 12.59kg (27.7lbs) with the coil shock damper too!
Vital MTB – Just a few short years ago we never expected to be praising 29-inch bikes so often, but you can’t deny a good ride. Orbea’s new Rallon is yet another new wagon-wheeled bike that will put a grin on any descent-craving aggressive rider’s face. With excellent handling in the steep, fast, and rowdy, all while being capable of making the journey to the top, the Rallon is absolutely one bike we wouldn’t hesitate to throw a leg over again. With Metric and Boost spacing, modern enduro geometry, and well-thought-out features and design, we’re sure the shelf life of this bike will deliver years of hard charging and fun riding to come.
